Makoto and Ami remembered who they were to each other long before they remembered who Usagi/Serenity was. Every time they kiss after baking in Makoto’s kitchen, they remember something new from their past life. Ami was unable to figure out exactly what about that exact scenario returned memories to them, but it didn’t stop her from proposing continued and repeated experimentation to Makoto.
