Paphiopedilum Avalon Mist

This plant was a hand me down from my friend from my society.  She was downsizing her collection so she could focus on Catts, and they tend to be larger.  I gladly accepted since I was beginning to enjoy paphs quite a bit.  That was almost a year ago now.  It was in bloom then, and it is still in bloom now.  I love this paph.

It is a sequential bloomer, which means it will continue to bloom from the same spike for a long period of time.  When I first brought the plant home it had bloomed 4 times already, it continues to produce a bloom that lasts roughly 2  months, with a week in between the last bloom fading, and a new bloom opening.

It came with only one fan, but had had previous fans that had died off.  Since it’s been in my care, it has began to produce two new fans, each in different stages of growth.  The first one is a small growth, that has about 3 leaves now.  The second one is still fairly small, and still hidden within the leaves of the oldest growth.  The plant appears to enjoy where I grow it.

This is a hybrid of (Paph primulinum x Paph Pinocchio).  The leaves do not have any mottled effect to them, but they are a matte green.  It is currently potted in Coconut Husk Chips with pebbles and oyster shells.  Once the new growth is a bit larger I will repot into a bark, charcoal, pebble, and moss mix.

It grows under lights, but at the very edge of the shelf, so it gets about phal light levels.  And it remains around room temperature, but sometimes cooler because I grow in my basement.  Humidity stays between 40-60% most days.   The bloom has no fragrance.

I’m glad you’re posting again!! I check back every once in a while. I enjoy your posts. It seems like all the orchid bloggers I was following all of the sudden got too busy to blog. I understand, but I was gaining lots of valuable info. So thanks for the updates!

I admit, I could post some more. But with the warmer weather, I’m not really around much. I’m out enjoying the sun. I will try to get some more posts up real soon!

Hope your plants are growing nicely 🙂
