A fire at a vacation park on the Northumberland coast destroys three cabins and leaves behind the charred remains of the park owner’s sister. The discovery of human remains partially buried in the woods leads Stanhope and Healy back to the disappearance of a local schoolgirl during a coalminers’ strike 30 years earlier. Then evidence turns up indicating the girl was at the scene of the strike. Could the protests be connected to her death?
3 Muddy Waters

Stanhope and Healy investigate the murder of a member of the Irish traveler community, found floating in a farm’s slurry tank. The farmer reports that two of his laborers, both illegals from Serbia, have vanished, though he is less forthcoming about his family’s long-running dispute with the travelers. Could the disappearance of the Serbians and the death of the Irishman be connected?
4 Shadows in the Sky

A well-loved family man plunges to his death from the top of a multistory parking lot—but did he jump, or was he pushed? Stanhope discovers the victim had been drinking, fighting, and lying to his wife and children. He had also made enemies among his coworkers at the docks, who blamed him for a recent fatality. The detectives try to untangle the web of secrets the dead man was hiding.

I love her character. She's such a mother to everyone and her own back story ties in so well with the character she portrays. You can feel her emotion and completely understand why she's such a caring individual never having had her own children. She gives that love to everyone around her exactly as a mother would her children. I also love that she's so believably dowdy but in real life this wonderful actress is such a polished and pretty lady! She's got such wonderful talent! 😀

The series is brilliant. Brenda Blethyn is one of the greatest actresses around. Like Columbo, the other actors seem to raise their game when in a scene with Vera..and the cop is more interesting than any mystery. Also features a lot of young talent who have gone on to further success, Cush Jumbo for example.

Enjoyable series in the format of Columbo and Sherlock Holmes. Vera is a frumpy, grumpy detective with a taste for solitude and whiskey. She leads her crew on weekly searches for clues to solve murders in Northumberland.
