    Description

Davallia trichomanoides is a furry-footed, fanciful fern, commonly known as the Squirrel’s Foot Fern. Finely divided, dark green foliage dress fuzzy rhizomes that resemble the foot of a squirrel. The distinctive, hairy rhizomes are easily seen creeping over the edge of a pot or along the soil surface. This unique fern is a popular fern as a houseplant or in a mild-climate garden.

Squirrel’s Foot Fern is a small to medium fern with triangular, shiny, finely divided, firm-textured leaves. Semi-evergreen, the old fronds self-shed followed by a short dormant period before new fronds emerge. Light brown, furry, long rhizomes are appealing and add interest as they creep over the edges of containers or rocks in mild climate gardens. Other common names include Black Rabbit’s Foot Fern or Hare’s Foot Fern, but some think these remarkable rhizomes also resemble spider legs.

Davallia trichomanoides is a great indoor fern that is easy to grow and can tolerate the lower humidity that is often found in the home. Outdoors, this Davallia looks great in shaded patios or porches, in containers, raised beds, or hanging baskets where the furry feet can be seen. Especially suited for woodland gardens, plant Squirrel’s Foot Fern among rocks as a ground cover to exhibit the creeping rhizomes. This semi-hardy to semi-tender fern is fast growing, easy to grow, and very adaptable in mild-climate gardens.

Squirrel’s Foot Fern is a unique and beautiful fern that is perfect for adding texture and interest to a shady garden or indoor space. The distinctive rhizomes, delicate fronds, and ease of care make Davallia trichomanoides a popular fern choice.

    Plant Care

Davallia trichomanoides prefers well-draining soil and shade. Provide regular water during active growth then reduce watering during dormancy period. Soil should not be too moist as overwatering will lead to rot.

Davallia trichomanoides is a semi-tender fern suited for USDA growing zones 10-11 in frost-free climates. Semi-tender ferns grow best where nighttime temperatures are mostly above 50°F. Semi-tender ferns grow well in coastal California, in the central or southern regions.

This semi-evergreen fern sheds its fronds once a year then enters a brief period of slow growth, followed by a flush of new growth. Generally self-shedding but if the old fronds remain as the new fronds appear, remove the old fronds with hand shears to allow room for the new growth.

As an indoor plant, this fern is adaptable to low or bright indirect light, and can withstand lower humidity levels found in homes better than most other ferns.

    FAQ's

Q: What are the brown spots on the underside of my fern?
A: The brown spots on the underside of the fern leaf are spores which is how ferns reproduce. Sporangia is a specialized structure that holds the spores and develops in clusters called sori which may appear as dark dots, lines, or rusty patches and arranged in symmetrical or scattered patterns, or completely cover the lower leaf surface.
