Orchids

My first orchid grew on a windowsill in New York city. Today, we have orchids in the pool cage, some in the house and several growing in trees

A reliable-blooming Dendrobium, Pumpkin Patch. Detail on the right.

The common Dendrobiums here in the US, open sprays of flowers on one or more “flower spikes” usually from the top of the newest growth. Dendrobium Nobiles bloom, one flower or cluster of flowers from each leaf joint. The Angel Moon below right, now (Jan 2022) has about 50 bud clusters that means that each will become two to three flowers.

It’s Springtime, and (even in Florida) plants “wake up.”

Even as a Phal dies (the one below suffered “crown rot” so no new leaves) it goes out in a blaze of Glory

Something new! I have seen many Phalaenopsis clones on old flower spikes (stems), but this is new to me. I have three phals that are cloning by growing a new plant from the root base. Here’s a pic of one.

Finally, one of my King of Taiwan Cattleyas just flowered. I have two more “divisions” of this plant.

RLC King of Taiwan

Finally, the Vandas are slowly waking up. This is a V. Kultana Perfect Beauty (modest name, I know.)

BLC (Brasso Laelia Cattleya) ‘Copper Queen’
Dendrobium Bicentennial Blue – as of today, it has seven spikes with buds or flowers.
