Phalaenopsis Wiganiae

This guy has finally opened most of his blooms–He blooms every year in January–

He is Phalaenopsis Wiganiae, a primary hybrid of two species, Phalaenopsis schilleriana and Phalaenopsis stuartiana–

Orchid nomenclature can be confusing, but a primary hybrid is when two species within the same genera are crossed, creating the hybrid, in this case, Phalaenopsis Wiganiae–By contrast, hybrids created between two different genera are called generic hybrids–

Though I mostly grow cattleyas, this is one of my favorite orchids in my collection because of the beautiful leaves and the fact that he was one of the first orchids I got to re-bloom–I’ve had him a while now–
