Psychopsis (Oncidium) Mendenhall 'Hildos' FCC/AOS (Psychp. Butterfly x Psychp. papilio). This particular clone has received the highest award granted by the American Orchid Society, a First Class Certificate (FCC), because of the large flower and attractive round lip! This alone reflects how good this plant and its flowers really are. The flowers look like large butterflies with brightly colored bodies (the lip, a modified petal), very long antennae-like petals, and outspread wing-like dappled yellow and brown sepals.

Onc. Mendenhall 'Hildos' has beautiful mottled green foliage covered in mahogany checks and spots. The flower spikes can get 18 inches to 2 feet tall and will produce a single large flower that lasts 3 weeks and will then fade while another bud is produced and will flower a few weeks after the earlier flower. This can go on perpetually. Some flower spikes last up to 15 years! New spikes are added annually as new growths form at the base of the plant. If a flower spike should accidentally break, another spike will form just below the break at the nearest node. Grow in medium light and water as the mix becomes nearly dry. Feed with a balanced fertilizer every time you water and flush with clear water once per month to prevent fertilizer and salt buildup.

Psychopsis are unusual in that they can bloom nonstop for 5-15 years on the same flower stem. They have one flower at a time per stem but will develop numerous stems as the plant gets larger. Never cut the flower spikes even if you should accidentally break one as they can branch below the break and continue to flower. The flowers last about three weeks before falling off and within another three weeks or so, another bud opens and repeats the process. They are easy and grow best a bit crowded, but prefer new mix or moss — repot every year or so, but don't over pot. Water regularly in spring to fall. Reduce watering in the winter and let pot dry between waterings.
