Medicinal Orchids of Asia

Abstract

This large chapter discusses the botany, phytochemistry and herbal usage of Paphiopedilum, Papilionanthe, Pecteilis, Pelanthera, Peristylis, Phalenopsis, Pholidota, Platanthera, Pleione, Plocoglottis. Pogonia, Polystachya, Pomatocalpa and Ponerorchis. Herbal usage is discussed in detail with examples of published herbal prescriptions. Among the numerous compounds isolated from Phaius, Phalaenopsis, Pholidota and Pleione, some exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, sedative, anticonvulsant, cytotoxic and anti-angiogenesis properties. Compounds responsible for the floral fragrances of Platanthera and Polystachya have also been studied. Several genera contain species of horticultural importance, and if the plants are to be used as medicine, they should be mass-propagated.
