Abstract
Cymbidium was cultivated in pots and brought indoors when in bloom to perfume room by the Chinese more than 2700 years ago. It featured in the writings of Confucius and in the Book of Odes (Chen and Tang 1982). Growing among weeds on steep mountain slopes unattended, and emitting a delicate fragrance when in bloom, Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium ensifolium epitomize the perfect Confucian gentleman who is simple, modest, non-demanding and generous.
