Over a Cappuccino with HIMANI SINGH

Trailblazing, exuberant and charming, Himani’s path to stardom has been anything but conventional. How has she transformed herself from a 20-yearold prodigious anchor to one of the most recognizable DJ’s and Host in India. What keeps you going? I entered the world of entertainment while still in college and there’s no looking back now. Commanding the stage, getting the crowd going, is my forte. It keeps me going and I feed off the energy of the crowd. For example, I am currently doing 5 shows in 3 days. You have come so far, how has the journey been? It’s been like a movie! I have experienced the lowest of lows and the highest of highs but I guess the struggle is part of being in the entertainment industry, there is no linear path, you need to put yourself out there. Having been a DJ, Game Show Host, Poker Anchor and Wedding Emcee, I don’t believe in saying no to an opportunity. I have done it all! 12 AUGUST, 2021 TULIP

LIFESTYLE |

What according to you sets you apart from your counterparts? I don’t believe in the conventional. People lead hectic lives; entertainment offers them an escape. They pay to be entertained and I go out of my way to give people a personalised, unforgettable experience. That is my niche, that is my speciality. An Anchor and now a DJ, how does Dj-ing compared to be on the stage? 51 seconds that’s how long it takes for people to make a first impression about you. For a DJ, Performer or Host, it’s my job to capture the audience’s attention in the first 51 seconds. After that, I feel the room vibes and go with the flow. Energy is everything. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’m now a signed artist with the Meet brothers. I have made 2 official remixes for them. One is from the movie dream girl featuring Ayushmann khuranna and Nushrat Burecha and the other one featuring Urvashi Rautela. I have also hosted a Poker show for Voot and a reality show for Mx player. What would you say is the secret behind your success? There are no secrets! It’s a lot of hard work, I know it sounds boring but listen, I am an entertainer first. I am an Artist, but I am only successful if my client is happy. When I see a nightclub erupt to my music, or the father of the groom tear up with joy, that is how I measure success, no amount of money or headlining shows can give me that feeling. What do we expect next? I am back hosting all week in Hyderabad, and I am doing a celebrity interview in Mumbai next week, followed by being the face of a web series on Holiday Homes in Goa. I’m also working on another official remix. The work never stops and I don’t intend to slow down.

Rapid Fire What’s your daily dose of happiness? Coffee, more like caffeine rush (haha) and of course music. Anchoring or Dj-ing? Stage person. Either ways, It’s a high for me. Name a music festival on your bucket list? I have a couple of them. But burning man tops it all. 2 things you do before going on stage? • A quick self-pep talk. • Deep breaths. What’s your ideal guy like? Funny, wise, ambitious and intelligent. (Also add tall dark and handsome haha)

CUISINE |

Massaman curry, Thailand

Emphatically, the king of curries and perhaps the king of all foods. Spicy, coconutty, sweet and savory, Massamans combination of flavors has more personality than a Thai election. Thankfully, someone invented rice with which diners can mop up the last drizzle of this curry sauce. Tastes best with: rice and naan.

Neapolitan Pizza, Italy

Let’s face it, everyone loves Italian food. The best pizza was and still is the Neapolitan, that insists on sea salt, high grade wheat flour, the use of only three types of tomatoes and the strict use of a wood fired oven, among other quality stipulations. The Neapolitians created a food that a few can make properly but everyone enjoys thoroughly. Tastes best with: absolutely every sauce. TULIP - AUGUST, 2021 15

| CUISINE

Sushi, Japan

When Japan wants to create something right, it creates it really right. Whether its Toyota, Sony or raw fish and rice Sushi, the Japanese products make it to almost the top of the list. The fish and rice in Sushi is put together so beautifully that it makes this a global first date favorite. Tastes best with: Pickled ginger and Soya sauce.

Hamburger, Germany

When something tastes so good that people spend US $20 billion each year in a single restaurant chain devoted to it, you know it has to fit into this list. The bread-meatsalad combination is so good that countries have ravaged their eco systems to produce more cows. Tastes best with: Barbecue sauce. 16 AUGUST, 2021 TULIP

CUISINE |

Rendang, Indonesia

Beef is slowly simmered with coconut milk and a mixture of lemongrass, galangal, garlic, turmeric, ginger and chilies and lest to stew for a few hours to create this dish of tender, flavorful bovine goodness. Tasting it fresh out of kitchen will tend your stomach into an overdrive. Tastes best with: Steamed lemon rice.

Chelo Kebab, Iran

Chelo kebab is the national dish of Iran. The meal consists of steamed saffron rice and hot kebabs accompanies by grilled tomatoes and butter. Pick your meat, shove a stick through it and grill. Then wonder why you don’t eat like this every day. Tastes best with: Naan and Mint chutney. TULIP - AUGUST, 2021 17

| CUISINE

Chicken Parm, Australia

Melted Parmesan and mozzarella cheese and a peppery-garlicy tomato sauce drizzled over the top of a chicken fillet, Aussie pub-goers claim this Italian dish as their own. Since the make it so well, there’s no point arguing. Tastes best with: Spaghetti.

Goicuon, Vietnam

This summer roll is made from pork, shrimp, rice, herbs and other ingredients wrapped in rice paper. Its “meat-light” with the flavors of refreshing herbs erupting in your mouth. Its wholesome, easy and the very definition of ‘more-ish’. Tastes best with: Vermicelli Noodles. 18 AUGUST, 2021 TULIP

CUISINE |

Chili Crab, Singapore

You can’t visit Singapore without trying its spicy, sloppy, meaty specialty. While there is a dozen of ways to prepare crab, chili crab remains the local bestseller. Spicy chili-tomato gravy tends to splatter, which is why you need to mop everything up with buns. Tastes best with: Baked cheese and Mantou buns.

Masala Dosa, India

A crispy, rice batter crepe encases a spicy mix of mashed potato, which is then dipped in coconut chutney, pickles, tomato-lentil sauces and other condiments. It is a fantastic breakfast food that will help you going till lunch, when you’ll probably come back for another. Tastes best with: Coconut chutney and tangy Sambhar.

I’m sure some of you are left reeling about why French fries didn’t make it to the list but hey! We should give a chance to other foods to prove themselves, shouldn’t we? TULIP - AUGUST, 2021 19

THE HANDLOOM HERITAGE

India is divinely known for its culture, traditions and ethnicity. The ancient history of handlooms is extraordinarily vivid and has traces of its origin back to the 8th century. The impressive convention of handweaving is a dominant part of India's cultural heritage. The weavers of India, inculcate art into variant, flexible and everlasting experimentation of fabric that elevates the fashion industry. Handlooms are timeless and reflect a beautiful masterpiece made by talented artisans and weavers. Every handloom fabric is different from another, even if I have two weavers that craft the same design, there will be a difference because each handloom story depends on the weaver’s mood. His style, art, and mood reflect in the hand-woven classic. - By Avanthika Reddy

HISTORY OF HANDLOOM Source: chinmayaupahar.in

Indian Handloom dates back to the Indus valley civilization. Even in ancient times, Indian fabrics were exported from Rome, Egypt and China. In earlier times, almost every village had its own weavers who made all the clothing requirements needed by the villagers like sarees, dhotis, etc. Some areas where it is cold in winter there were specific wool weaving centers. But everything was Hand-Spun and Hand-Woven. Traditionally, the entire process of cloth making was self-reliant. The cotton / silk / wool came from the farmers, foresters or shepherds, and the cotton was cleaned and transformed by weavers themselves or the agricultural labour community. Small handy instruments were used in the process, including the famous spinning wheel (also known as Charkha), mostly by women. This hand spun yarn was later made into cloth on the handloom by the weavers

HANDLOOM IS TIMELESS Source: chinmayaupahar.in

In India there are different styles of weaving in different parts of the country, and sometimes in the same region there could be as wide a range as 20- 30 varied styles. From simple plain fabrics, Tribal motifs, geometric designs, tye and dye, to exhaustive art on muslin. Our weavers have been master craftspeople. No other country can boast of such an exclusive range of rich textile art, even today. Just like paintings and photographs, each woven sari is a masterpiece. Saying that handloom must perish for its time consuming and laborious compared to powerloom, is like saying painting, photography, clay modelling will go obsolete because of 3d printers and graphic designs.

HANDLOOM AND THE FASHION WORLD GAURANG SHAH

Gaurang Shah is a famous designer from Hyderabad. With the fashion world developing and moving to trends from the west, Gaurang Shah made his statement in the world of Handloom. A self taught designer who is one of the award winning designers in our country has an eye for Indian Heritage and Ethnicity. He has tremendously made efforts in bringing back the dying art of weaving and popularizing KHADI. His magical collection “Taramati” turned heads at the Lakme Fashion week 2020. An enormous display of 30 handwoven sarees inspired from the Golconda era were brought into the limelight. Inspired by a courtesan of the Golconda era “Taramati” Gaurang Shah revived the tradition and elegance of Hyderabad history.

HANDLOOM ADMIRERS

Individuals from different walks of life showcase their fondness for handlooms and express the role handlooms play in their life.

“Since I was a kid, handlooms have predominantly been a part of my life. Later in life as I learnt how each fabric is individually weaved by hand, my respect and love for the handloom community increased. Handlooms have now become a daily part of my life, from work wear to casual wear, I prefer handlooms. It is this unexplainable feeling I have when you support real art that makes me choose handlooms over and over again”.

“India has a long tradition of excellence in making handlooms and as an individual I feel that it is important to recognize this excellence and keep the tradition alive for generations to come. We might be very modern, westernized and adopt foreign cultures but we must remember where we come from and what we represent. Possessing love for and recognizing traditional handlooms and artisan work helps us stay closer to our motherland and its wonders. It's great to see so many small businesses come up with ideas to expand the horizon for handlooms. It is something this generation should put light on and be proud of”.

Harkeerat Kaur

“I love handloom products because of their extremely rich heritage, intricate designs and also that they are sustainable. That being said at a time when the country’s textile culture is vanishing, I also feel that we should know what we had and have lost because of the power looms taking over, the practice of wearing handlooms faded away. Exposing children to handloom is a great tool to reclaim our culture. Hence, we should do our bit to preserve the country’s heritage textiles for the future generation”.

Vani Videha

, BFA in Applied Arts.

“I believe there is nothing else that can compensate for the beauty of handlooms. With the latest innovations and technology taking over the handmade handloom craft, the ethnicity and uniqueness of the craft is deteriorating by the day. We all must support our artisans as they are the creative threshold of handloom culture in our country”.

“Being 90 I have seen a lot in this world. From the pre-independence era to the days of online classes. Earlier in my youth, Handlooms were a major source of fashion to us. We used to directly buy from the weavers and artisans. But the latest development of power looms has taken the gift of art from the weavers. I have experienced the true form of art and encourage future generations to recognise the value of handlooms. My personal favourite is Gadwal cotton sarees”.

RAKSHA BANDHAN: TIME TO CELEBRATE SIBLINGS Everyone knows that No love is bigger than the love of siblings! Raksha Bandhan is a holy festival that is all about the love brothers and sisters share. On this day, sister’s tie rakhi around the wrist of her brother, signifying their affection towards him. Raksha Bandhan that is also knows as the bond of protection is celebrated on a full-moon day of Shravan month. Rakhi is one of the festivals that is celebrated every year with the same enthusiasm as it was celebrated centuries ago, it is one of the oldest festivals of India that is celebrated to strengthen the bond of love between a brother and sister. Raksha Bandhan celebration is where every sister ties rakhi on her brother’s wrist, performs aarti before her brother, puts tilak on his forehead and prays for his long life, success and well-being. After which, the brother in respect to all the efforts of her sister, gifts a rakhi gift as a token of love and a promise to take care of her and be by her side in the times of need. This holy festival reflects love among the sisters and brothers. Tulip brings to you a few special bonds of siblings and how they celebrate this day full of love.

RACHNA RAMCHANDANI AND MANISH RAMCHANDANI What do you like about Raksha Bandhan? The best thing about Raksha Bandhan according to me is getting gifts from my brother and feeling blessed to have my brother on this special day. How do you celebrate this special day? Me and my brother celebrate this special day watching our favourite movies, teasing each other, going on a long drive, and playing games with everyone in the family. How would you describe your bond with your sibling? Our bond cannot be measured in words, the only thing I can say is that we can do anything for each other. Your favourite memory with your sibling? My favourite memory with my brother is when I saw tears in his eyes for the first time while I was leaving after my marriage, and that was an emotional moment for us and something that really touched me.

PRANAV ALLE PRIYANSHI ALLE AND MANSI ALLE What do you like about Raksha Bandhan? The promise given to each other to stand with them through everything for eternity. The celebration of the bond we share and also the gifts. How do you celebrate this special day? We wake up in the morning, dress up well, do a small pooja and tie rakhi, spend time with each other, make or get gifts for each other, talk about all the memories we've shared and laugh about all the silly ones. How would you describe your bond with your sibling? Very strong, they're more like my best friends than my siblings, we share everything with each other and support each other's dreams and goals. Of course we fight sometimes but never go a day without talking to each other. Your favourite memory with your sibling? When we were little and our parents would go off to work, so we had the house to ourselves. We would play silly games all day and have competitions where nobody won but we laughed throughout until our stomach hurt.

How would you describe your bond with your sibling? My brothers are like my best friends, we share each and everything that makes our bond even more special and stronger. They are my strength, with their love and support I can achieve anything in my life. Your favourite memory with your sibling? I do not have a specific memory as every day I spend with them is special, we have so many memories together.

DIVISHA GUPTA VANSH GUPTA AND PRANAV GUPTA What do you like about Raksha Bandhan? The main reason I like Rakhi is that it celebrates the special bond I share with my brothers and at the same time it revives the emotional bonding. However, the excitement for exchanging presents will always remain a constant. How do you celebrate this special day? On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, I apply a "tilak" on my brother’s foreheads, feed them sweets and tie rakhis on their wrists. While wishing for their health, prosperity and well-being. In addition to this, I also like to spoil them with a few presents showing my love and affection towards them. While in return my brothers also give me gifts followed by a promise to love and support me forever. How would you describe your bond with your siblings? I feel my bond with both my brothers is beyond something that can be expressed in words. Although if I had to describe our bond in few words they would be unconditional love, care and support. Being the middle child I get the best of both worlds as I get to learn from one brother and I also get the opportunity to be a role model to the other. Your favourite memory with your sibling? It’s almost impossible to pick a particular memory with either of them. Most of my treasured memories with my elder brother are from our childhood where we played, argued and reunited at all times. Moreover, the best-loved memory I have with my younger brother is from when I use to take him for painting classes. It was always a great bonding experience.

SUSHMA REDDY AND CHAITANYA REDDY What do you like about Raksha Bandhan? The fact that it is a glorious and enthusiastic Indian celebratory festival which is celebrated mainly amongst those who share the bond of brother and sister, they don’t have to be related by blood, sisters also tie Rakhi to their cousins, like me as I am a single child. I have always been intrigued by the varieties of Rakhis that are made during this festival. I somehow see a connection between Rakhis and Friendship Bracelets, the essence behind ‘Tying a band with a knot’ remains to be similar among various cultures despite the timelines. It leaves us with a message that says: Let us stay UN-ITED by the knots of concordance and let us stay UN-TIED by the knots of discordance. How do you celebrate this special day? Having lived separately from each other, we never got the opportunity to celebrate this festival in a traditional way. During my childhood I remember sending him my Raksha Bandhan wishes via post by writing letters to him, they were enclosed with a Rakhi in them. How would you describe your bond with your sibling? Being the only child in my family, my cousin is the closest to a sibling that I have, we share a special bond mainly because we were born exactly 5 days apart. We grew up spending our childhood days together at my grandparent’s place. Your favourite memory with your sibling? When I was in 5th grade, I got a double promotion which took me straight to 7th grade, when I met him during the summer holidays at my grandma’s place he felt shattered that we no longer would remain on the same page. Eventually when I passed out of school, I opted for BiPC in intermediate but a year later I decided to switch to MPC, hence I lost a year by doing that. This landed me at the same place where my cousin was, he was in his first year of MPC as well. When we met for the summer vacation that year, I can’t explain how elated he was to see that we were back in the same boat. I have a clear memory of that moment when he had made it very obvious to me about how much he had missed out on me being at the same wavelength as him throughout those years.

SHRUTI SARIN AND ABHISHEK SARIN What do you like about Raksha Bandhan? The festival is beautiful as it celebrates the bond that we share as siblings. Tying Rakhi to our little brother is a symbol to always remind him that we are always here to protect and bless him with all that he wishes for, it also reminds us to stay strong & grow the bond. How do you celebrate this special day? Every year, Aditi and I fly down to Bangalore, if our little brother is in town we celebrate this day with lots of Indian mithai! However, when Abhishek is in Dubai, we send him the Rakhi and a bunch of presents. How would you describe your bond with your sibling? I’ve got a Sister, Aditi and a younger brother, Abhishek. Abhishek is 10 years younger to me and I’ve literally seen him grow up and become the kindest Human that he is today. I have to admit, I’ve been more of his mother than his sister. Your favourite memory with your sibling? My favourite memories with Abhishek has always been on our Travel Diaries! It’s the only quality time we get to spend with each other. However, if I need to point out at one, it would be the trip I took to drop him off for his Engineering at BITS Pilani Dubai.

NIMISHA VORA AND NAMAN VORA What do you like about Raksha Bandhan? What I like about Raksha Bandhan is the fact that we truly realize the value of siblings and cousins. I get free gifts, extra attention and tons of chocolate so I'm not complaining. But on a deeper level, that's the one time my brothers express what value I hold in their lives through different actions and I wouldn't trade that for the world. How do you celebrate this special day? I'd choose to sit with all of my brothers and spend time with them for hours. Reminiscing old memories, making fun of each other, pulling legs and just being in their presence. I'd also love spending the day getting pampered. How would you describe your bond with your sibling? My brother is the person I'm the closest to, we have a bond that is irreplaceable. We cover each other, know every secret of each other but more than that annoy each other's head off. I'd steal his clothes, he'll hit my teddy bears, I'd punch him, he'd barge in the room and leave the door open and yet at the end of the night we'd be honest about how we are feeling. He isn't someone who would go and kick someone who would hurt me, rather he's someone who would annoy me when I'm low and make me feel that I'm not alone, he holds a part of me. Your favourite memory with your sibling? I have a box full of funny embarrassing and hilarious moments, that's an everyday thing. There was this one time: I was crying and was pretty bummed and low about something, the typical sad girl. He heard me and got super awkward, he comes up to me, lays a hand on my back and pats me twice. There was a change in my emotions instantly, it was enough for me to realize that I'm not the only one going through stuff and even if I was, I should go and binge watch FRIENDS with him rather than crying over a lost cause. I can also talk about the time he lost a MMA fight with me but he'll disagree that ever happened so I'll keep that till closed doors.

Things required 1. Firstly to get started, gather containers. You can either buy pots from your nearby plant supply store or re-use the delivery containers or old crockery for the same. 2. Secondly, our very basic element, soil. It is essential to make sure your soil is clean without any contaminants. Healthy soil results in a better crop. An alternative to soil is cocopeat. It is a natural fibre made out of coconut husk. It is also referred to as coco soil. 3. Next, we require seeds. You don't need to buy seeds from stores. Vegetables at home suffice the need for a beginner level mini garden. Seeds from plants like tomatoes. cucumber, coriander seeds etc can be used. If you're looking for flowering plants, prepotted plants wrapped in black plastic will be available. 4. You will also require plates to place under the plants for the excess water to drain off. 5. It would be handy for you to gather gardening tools for convenient weeding, potting and growth of the plants.

Let’s get started 1. The first thing to do is ensure you have excess water drainage holes for your pots. If you're buying plants from the store, they will have them ready for you but in case you're using containers at home, make sure they have holes at the bottom of the container. You can use the heated nail trick here! 2. Ensure the placement of plates under the plants for the excess water flow.

3. When you're filling the pot with soil make sure the soil isn't packed inside the container. Doing so the roots will find it hard to grow. The soil must be packed loosely for air to pass and roots to spread effortlessly. 4. If you're using seeds, the process of potting is simple. Depending on the size of your container, make tiny sized holes, 2-4 inches deep. You need to ensure that the seed is neither sowed in too deep nor floating up off the surface. If you're using pre-potted plants, make sure you dig in deep enough for the soil brick attached to the roots of the plant to be completely settled in. 60 AUGUST, 2021 TULIP

FEATURE | 5. Next, after potting the plant or seeds, we need to ensure we water the plants adequately. Do not use excess water, ensure the soil gets damp. 6. One of the most important elements of gardening is to ensure you place the pots in an area that receives sufficient sunlight and shade. Shade is equally important for the plant to sustain heat. Balconies, Kitchen utilities, windows etc serve as the perfect place for placing your plants.

Always remember 1. It is important to frequently remove weeds from the pots. The growth of weeds can disrupt the healthy growth of the plant as they take up the nutrients and space away from the plant. 2. Regularly water the plants depending on the plants. Do not water during afternoons. Either in the morning or evenings, we must water, being sure of the weather. 3. Adding manure once a month depending on the size of the plants plays a significant role in the growth of the plant. You can use the chemical growth add ons available at the plant stores or make your organic compost pit. Using organic substances is much preferred compared to chemical manure. 4. Grafting your plants when they excessively grow is essential. Once in 3-4 Months trim the edges of the stem where there is no flowering or fruit for the plant to develop better.

Organic manure suggestions 1. vegetable and fruit waste from our kitchen have unbeatable nutrients which they can contribute to the plants. 2. You can make your compost pit, using layers of soil and vegetable and plant waste. It usually takes 30-40 days for the manure to be ready. 3. Banana peels make a difference to the plants. 4. dried lemon leftovers are a great source of nitrogen. 5. Eggshells help reduce the acidity levels in the soil. 6. Green tea, used coffee beans provide acidic levels for berry plants. 7. wood ash if available also decomposes in the soil and naturally enriches it.

Adenium

FEATURE |

Adenium is more popularly known by local botanists and gardeners as the desert rose. Mostly used as Bonsai plants, these plants have bright and eye-sparkling colours and shades of red, which few flowers can compare to. One thing to note about these plants is that adenium is prone to attacks from worms, and so a good practice would be to apply a fungicide to the plants after cutting the stems. Learn more about Adenium.

| FEATURE “Gardening for me personally is a way to get away from all the daily hassles and stress. It’s very therapeutic to plant a seed, eventually see it grow into a beautiful plant. It’s important to devote some amount of time, patience and love to our nature. Gardening helps me cope with the stress besides we can grow our own fresh and tasty vegetables. You don’t have to be a professional at the beginning itself, you can slowly learn by spending some quality time in your garden, you can explore nature, connect with the soil. The satisfaction and amount of happiness you receive when you see your mini jungle is indescribable and for me, gardening is the best hobby one can have.”

Usha Nair, Homemaker

“I grew up watching my mom's garden plants and how she cared for them. Eventually, I grew up loving gardening and being around nature even more. For me it is therapeutic. I always spend some time on my balcony around the plants, it's my escape and sanctuary. During summers I would go to my hometown where my grandfather would love to take us to the farms and teach us about the various things related to gardening. Nothing is more satisfying than gardening and watching plants grow”.

Komal Jain, Social Media Manager

“I grew up in an agricultural family. Most of my childhood was spent amidst the fields. Later on in life, we moved to the city but my love for plants and nature made me miss the village lifestyle. That is when my interest in gardening grew. I used to make my very own kitchen garden in my backyard and teach my kids how to nurture and take proper care of the plants. Now I have four beautiful granddaughters who love gardening as much as I do. Recently, I’ve moved back to my hometown and harvested around 22 acres of crops. My love for plants and nature can never find an end and that's what makes me go every day”.

EXPERTS ON BUSTING MYTHS OF WEIGHT LOSS -By Umera Riyaz

In this new era of work from home and online school. We have developed a new culture of sitting around. Due to the risk of Covid, many of us have limited ourselves to home and have depended on online services to survive. Although these new inventions have been a great help to us, they also greatly affected diet and physical health. With the limited movement of the body, many people have reported weight gain in 2020 and 2021. Now that the lockdown restrictions have been lifted, a lot of us will be hitting the gym. We decided to bust the myths of weight loss for you. Dr Fariha Tanveer, Dietitian and Nutritionist (B.Sc, M.Sc and BEMS) helped us list out a few myths. Instagram: @nutritionwithfariha 66 AUGUST, 2021 TULIP

Dr Fariha Tanveer

WELLNESS | ALL CALORIES ARE EQUAL

You may know that carbohydrates, fat, and protein have different caloric values per gram, but they are also absorbed differently by the body. Protein is by far the most efficient, because it requires more energy to metabolize, which means that the body burns more calories when you eat protein compared to fat and carbs.

SUPPLEMENTS CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

Supplements alone cannot help you lose weight, rather a well-balanced diet can fulfil most of your nutrient needs. But if you’re on a limited diet or if any vitamin or mineral is deficient, adding a few safe supplements could provide the extra boost you need to stay on track with your healthy weight loss regimen. Without proper diet and nutrition, no shortcut supplement will make you lose weight.

CARBS MAKE YOU FAT

Let's stop the CARBS phobia. There are numerous historical examples of populations that remained slim and healthy eating carbohydrates in the diet. This indicates carbs themselves are not fattening. Indigenous groups only became obese when they consumed too many calories coming from high fat or high carbohydrate diet. Balance of Carbohydrates, fats and protein in the diet is the key to weight management.

FAST FOOD IS ALWAYS FATTENING

Fast food- doesn’t cause weight gain but a calorie surplus. If your goal is weight loss you can achieve this while eating your favourite, calorie-dense foods like pizza, burgers or even biryani. But don't forget the moderation & calories deficit that's the key.

STARVING ONESELF IS THE BEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT

I would say starving is the worst way of trying to lose weight. It's just equal to fooling yourself when trying to eat an extreme calorie deficit diet. When you stop eating or eat very little, your body goes into starvation mode. Your metabolism slows down and your body starts to preserve body fat, and when you consume a meal after you’ve been starving yourself, your body processes it differently. Since your metabolism has slowed down, your body will store it instead of using it. So, in other words, you'll end up gaining more body fat.

| WELLNESS Fathima Mehajabeen Ghouse, a clinical nutritionist (B.Sc, M.Sc, PGD and MBA) pointed out a few myths. Instagram: @nutrimentor_

IF YOU EXERCISE YOU CAN EAT ANYTHING Physical activity should be a part of the daily routine for all age groups, for a healthy lifestyle. The second part of the statement says you can eat anything. Based on your BMI, the quantity of consumption is known. Anything in limit is not harmful. One should make sure that the calories intake should be equal to the Output.

Fathima Mehajabeen Ghouse

DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER PROMOTES WEIGHT LOSS? Consumption of water is the most important part of your daily meals. But consumption of water does not aid in weight loss. It just aids the process of weight loss. Drinking plenty of water increases our body’s metabolism and flushes out the necessary wastes from the body. Also, there is no specific evidence that drinking water aids in weight loss. So yes, it's a myth.

WEIGHT LOSS IS FASTER WITH A JUICE CLEANSE

In others words, this is known as Detox. Detox is, only consumption of liquids/semi-liquids/only fruits (single fruit/fruit salad/juices)/Vegetables (Boiled/Salad/soup) the entire meals of the day is replaced by solid foods. Going on a detox diet for 2-3 days a month is not harmful. A maximum of five days is suggested. It will aid in weight loss. But this is shouldn’t be a preferred method for weight loss.

FAT CAN BE SWEATED OUT?

In other words, it means the more you sweat the more fat you burn. But it is not this way, it differs from individual to individual. Sweat happens for many other factors like body temperature, room temperature, genetics and a lot more. Your fat loss depends on types of exercises you do, how many sets you prefer and how consistent you are about it.

ZERO CALORIES DRINKS (SODA) ARE BETTER FOR YOU

The best zero calories drink is Water, no doubt the best drink for the body. But if we talk about soda. The term itself says that it's unhealthy for our bodies. People believe having zero-calorie sodas aid weight loss which is just a clear myth. No zero-calorie soda is zero calories and having these drinks may eventually lead to obesity, cardiovascular problems, gut issues, liver problems and old age can lead to dementia. On the whole Zerocalorie sodas have no direct health benefits. That's some myths and free advice to stay away from this year. 68 AUGUST, 2021 TULIP

LET'S REVAMP THE IGNORED ROOM, OUR KITCHEN When we build a home, a lot of our time goes on living areas and bedrooms. A commonly ignored space is the kitchen. The kitchen is often poorly built, with bad lighting and small countertops. In reality, the kitchen is the one room where we spend most of the time at home, cooking and eating. Here are a few tips to transform your kitchen without ripping it apart or deconstructing it.

Tips for kitchen lighting and floors from Riddhi Kadakia Garg - Interior Space Planner, Riddhi Design Studio Instagram: riddhi_interiorspaceplanner

1

Lighter shades are preferred for the flooring of the kitchen to make the room appear larger and at the same time, it looks neat and tidy.

2

The anti-skid tiles always takes away the deal as it keeps children and adults safe. It is also the ideal flooring for the kitchens as per Indian taste.

3

A combination of warm whites and natural whites has always been a go-to option in my designs, as it can be altered as per mood, occasion or get-togethers arranged at home. TULIP - AUGUST, 2021 69

| INTERIOR

4

Strip lights used in the skirting area or some shelf lights can create drama and are used to create a look that feels modern.

5

Reflective or glossy tiles also help the lights brighten up the area, helps the kitchen area look lit up, and gives a luxurious touch to space. Tips for Countertops and Storage from Varsha Prabhu Architect & Director, Urbanshaastra Smart Build Pvt. ltd. Instagram: @varshaprabhudotcom

Kitchens are the most used part of our homes and the most used area in the kitchen is of course the countertop. What’s the most important thing about a kitchen countertop?

1

The kitchen countertop height is one of the most important and heavily ignored aspects of designing a kitchen. What’s a beautiful kitchen for if it gives you a sore back after cooking your favourite meal? The height we usually see in the Indian market is 800mm or 2’8” measured from the finished floor level. So, get the measuring tapes out, and start measuring the ideal countertop height, stand straight, bend your arms at the elbow and measure the height from your elbow to the floor. The ideal height for you would be a measurement 4inches less than what you just measured.

2

The next important detail for countertops is the material of the slab. The criteria while selecting your countertop material should be durability. Quartz is a wonderful material that gives you the best of both worlds – function and aesthetic. The variety available to suit your design aesthetic is incredible. Apart from that, we have our very own Indian Natural granite stone which is economical, functional, aesthetic and super easy to maintain.

3

Open shelves are great options to store and display items you use regularly. In Indian households, which aren’t centrally air-conditioned, dust always accumulates. Open shelves are notorious for all the dust and grime. I always suggest my clients minimize the open shelves in kitchens from the hygiene perspective. Glass shutters with different finishes like clear glass, frosted glass or some beautiful etching do a great job to create a hide and seek effect with what is stored in your kitchen cabinets. Few important factors to look at: • Carefully choose the counter material to suit your cooking needs. The priority should always be in the order – Durability, Maintenance and Cost • The colour and finish of your countertop should be decided to compliment the colours and finishes of your kitchen cabinets. • The edge detail on the countertop is essential for both functionality and appearance. Remember edges need detailing both on the top and the bottom of the countertop slab. • Use the open kitchen shelves to add personality to your kitchen by using quirky storage boxes or displaying items from your crockery collection. • For open shelves, go for opaque materials like wood and stone rather than glass. 70 AUGUST, 2021 TULIP

BOOKS PI Club and the Circus

‘PI Club and the Circus’ is a tale of a group of curious friends who will leave no stone unturned to solve their first case. Mr Akshay Chowdhry’s book is a fast-paced mystery story that keeps young readers engaged with several twists and turns. The book takes us on a journey into the lives of a few curious children who are seeking camaraderie and find a purpose. In this case, the purpose is solving a mystery.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is an essential commentary of the Jazz age- the gaudiest era in American history, the roaring twenties. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrayed America as it was losing its ethical principle in a post world war raft to materialism besotted with a rapacious lifestyle. This is a book with intrigue and flawed characters struggling with a multitude of issues- coming to terms with one’s past, frantically pursuing selfserving motives, decadence, oscillating between imagination and reality, unfulfilled dream, lost love, loneliness, romance, and tragedy.

The Shadow Lines

This book is a journey, even as the nameless narrator is rooted in Calcutta, his imaginative universe knew few boundaries. The novel, despite manifesting bildungsroman elements, has no concrete stating or ending. The novel also subtly explores the political turmoil of post partition India- Identity crisis, communal riots, that inflicted irreparable damage on a lot of people. Through the unique narrative technique and a web of memories, I really enjoyed sailing through the tides of joys and sorrows and learnt that life goes on no matter what.

Libra

Scorpio

Cancer

You may feel issues of self-worth or self-esteem rise up. Old relationships may surface or you yet again confront the same tired issues. This creates feelings of barriers and distance.

Capricorn Family time should prevail. Restore your connections to your children, partner, family and friends. Family vacations, gatherings, reunions are all favored.

Use this month to clear the air. What have you been thinking and not saying? If you have not talked deeply lately take the time to do so.

Aquarius Practice your “spiritual sadhana,” which is “devotion with effort”. Reaffirm and restate any intention you made six months ago. Keep reinforcing this intention from August 8 through the full moon August 22. Watch the magic happen.

Gemini Slow down, you move too fast. You are likely to feel flooded with too much input, choice, activity or change. You are more prone to nervous tension due to an overstimulated mind or mouth. Slow your mind and body down. Try to find more peace of mind.

Virgo You may be required to be in hyper motion and feel the nervous tension of so much activity. As a consequence, you let the little things upset you and are inclined to pick and nag.

Sagittarius This one of your most powerful times of the year and is a crucial turning point for your tactics. Don’t underestimate this month. Use it to your advantage. Act courageously, consciously and decisively.

Pisces You have greater ability to draw the meaning out of your dreams and to see your life from a more subtle, spiritual or symbolic perspective.
