Yep. It happened. I bought an orchid. It was MINI and I love mini things, so I had to, bless my little heart. 🥲 🩷 Meet Chims. (Daughter named her.) She may be mini, but she still be mighty. First Plant Ever

I’ve got a number of orchid repots to do this spring/summer and I did my first today and thought I would share what I did in case it helps anyone with repotting. I started with the one that needed it most - she’s my oldest phal, almost two years in my care and has been in bloom since late December. It’s been 19 months since I last repotted her and she was showing signs that the media was damaging her health - as old roots die in the pot and as bark ages, it breaks down and this changes the pH, which has implications for how well they are able to absorb fertiliser and also high acidity will damage roots and leaves. I’ve been waiting for her to go into her vegetative growth stage (when they are making new roots and leaves) as that’s when phals cope best with repots. I find it best to soak the pot for 1-2 hours before repotting - soaking the roots makes them supple and easier to work with once they are out the pot, so you’re less likely to damage them and it’s easier to remove the old media. Healthy roots also green up so you’re more able to see which roots are dead/dying. White roots are normal - they are the ones that have been in the centre of the pot and haven’t been able to photosynthesise, but they are still healthy, functioning roots. I used sterilised pruners to cut off the dead roots and dead tissue and was so proud of the number of roots that I’m left with - she’s a prolific grower - and I had to put her in a pot that’s an inch wider as she wouldn’t fit back in her original pot! When you’re doing a repot because of the age of the media and you have a healthy plant with a good root system, it’s safe to sacrifice a few roots if they are not healthy. I cut off some roots in which the inner root was showing (as in the third photo) - though there is still green root below it, it will die soon and if I left it, it’ll age the media more quickly (Fun fact - the white string thing you can see in the photo is actually the root - what we see as the root, the green stuff, is actually not the root - it’s a coating called velamen and it’s essentially a sponge which helps the root to absorb the water). I repotted her in fresh bark, making sure there were no large air pockets and making sure that the aerial roots are left outside of the pot (they usually die if potted). I then watered the orchid, leaving the roots and new media to soak for 10 minutes, before draining the water. Because the repot will have stressed her out, I’m going to keep her out of direct heat and in filtered sunlight for a few weeks. She may lose her blooms, but they were starting to die off anyway, indicating she’s moved into the vegetative growth stage. My first post-fire bloom has opened and she’s beautiful (she’s scented too!). My orchids all seem to have fully recovered now too - always amazed at the resilience of nature!
