I saw some of this wild Bromeliad growing on the trees in Trade Winds Park not far northwest of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is a common species down there in some counties as Broward and also native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and the West Indies. It is a tank epiphyte that catches water in the leaves and feeds on the water and minerals on trees. It has stiff, leathery, grayish-green leaves that get about 12 to 28 inches long. It bears flowering spikes that get about 12 to 24 inches long with usually red bracts, that can also be yellow or rose or green, that contain small flowers that are usually violet, but can be white. The seeds are windborne.
