Castle fans aren’t the only ones in mourning. After ABC cancelled the show following eight seasons on Thursday, the cast — including Stana Katic, who plays Kate Beckett — addressed the news on social media.

In a letter to fans, her fellow castmates, and the crew, Katic wrote, “Your devotion to our show has carried us for these unforgettable 8 seasons. I’m lucky to have met worked with for the lot of you. I will always be grateful.”

ABC already announced the departure of Katic and Tamala Jones back in April. The network stated, in part, “We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship.”

As fans took in the cancellation news on Thursday, Jon Huertas (Javier Esposito) posted a series of tweets, at first writing, “Was a good run but #Castle is done.” He added, “Hollywood’s not an easy town. As a cast & crew we were all very lucky 2 have the right chemistry, love & support 2 create a wonderful show. that had success in a landscape of network TV where long runs R like unicorns.”

Actor Seamus Dever (Kevin Ryan) posted a cast photo to Instagram following the announcement, and Molly Quinn (Alexis Castle) called the show a “cornerstone of my life” on Twitter. She added, “Thank you @ABCNetwork for giving a carrottop kid of 14 an amazing star.”

Nashville, The Muppets, and Galavant were also among ABC’s cancellations. Prior to the news, Castle executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter were prepared for the axe.

“If we hear that we’re not coming back, we have shot something that we can put at the end of the episode as a way to put a button on everything,” Hawley told EW. “Obviously that would be a bad thing, because it would mean no more. We did it in order to try to protect the fans, because you can’t end the series on a cliffhanger.”
