Is Rust cross-platform?
Maksym ShylovThere are quite a few multiplayer survival simulation projects on the video game market, but Rust holds a special reverence because it manages to combine all the necessary elements of the genre in a nice wrapper. Today we will talk about Rust. Since many people will want to play their favorite game with friends when they have different game platforms, one pressing question remains. Is Rust cross-platform?
What is Rust?
Rust is a multiplayer survival game developed by Facepunch Studios. The game is an open-world game in which players face harsh survival conditions, fight for resources, build shelters and compete against other players. Rust was released in early access in 2013 and has since enjoyed tremendous popularity and an active community of players.
The multiplayer project was fully released on 8 February 2018 for both Windows and macOS platforms. Having become a success in the PC market, it was only a matter of time before the game appeared on consoles. Rust is based on the Unity game engine. A console version of Rust will see the light of day on May 21, 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
Rust gameplay
In Rust, players start with minimal resources and weapons and venture into a dangerous world full of wildlife, hostile animals and other players. The game maintains a high degree of freedom and non-linearity in gameplay. Players can explore the world, gather resources, create items, build shelters and interact with other players.
One of the key aspects of Rust is survival. Players need to keep track of their basic needs such as food, water and heat to stay alive. They must search for and gather resources to build weapons, tools and protection from enemies. Danger lurks at every turn and players must be careful not to fall prey to wild animals or hostile players.
There is also an extensive construction toolkit in the game of Rust. Players can create their own shelters, built from a variety of materials, to protect themselves from enemies and conserve their resources. Base building allows players to create defensive structures, traps and other devices to protect their possessions.

Cross-platform rules in Rust
Unfortunately for Windows and macOS players, cross-platform play in Rust is only available in Rust: Console Edition, that is, on past and current generation consoles. So, for example, a person with a PlayStation 5 can play with a friend who has an Xbox Series X.
There are potentially two main reasons why the developers made cross-platform available only for the console version of the game. The first is that since its release, Rust: Console Edition has had its own development roadmap and has evolved in a slightly different way than the PC version of the game. The second is that players with gamepads are in roughly different circumstances, while having Windows and macOS players on the same map as them could introduce an imbalance, as it is assumed that players with a mouse and keyboard may have an advantage over those with gamepads.
So far Facepunch Studios have made no new promises or announcements regarding the appearance of a cross-platform game in the PC version of Rust, so unfortunately you certainly can't expect to be able to join your friends on PlayStation or Xbox anytime soon if you have PC.
Conclusion
Rust has become an extremely popular survival game on all the platforms it has managed to release on. The developers from Facepunch Studios are offering players the benefit of cross-platform play on consoles such as PlayStation and Xbox. There are no indications that PC players will be able to join them yet from the creators of the project.
