Pityriasis rosea is a harmless skin rash usually seen in adolescents or young adults. The rash starts with a red scaly patch called the “herald patch”. A few days to weeks later, numerous smaller reddish colored oval shaped patches erupt about the abdomen, chest, back, arms, and legs.
The patches are often arranged in a classic “christmas tree” distribution. The sometimes itchy eruption typically lasts several weeks or a few months and will resolve on its own. Occasionally, it is mistaken for other conditions such as psoriasis, ringworm, or eczema. Treatment options include antihistamines to improve itching. topical steroids, or oral antibiotics.
