Description
Русский: Жук-олень[2] (лат. Lucanus cervus) — крупный жук из рода Lucanus в составе семейства рогачей. Является самым крупным жуком, обитающим на территории Европы[3][4]: отдельные особи самцов номинативного подвида могут достигать длины до 86—91 мм[5][6] при средней длине самцов 70—74 мм. Также является вторым по величине жуком (после реликтового дровосека)[7], обитающим на территории России.

Жук-олень встречается в дубравах и широколиственных лесах с примесью дуба в Европе, Передней Азии, Турции, Иране и Северной Африке. Самцы отличаются хорошо развитыми и увеличенными мандибулами, которые превращены в т. н. «рога». Личинки развиваются в древесине мёртвых лиственных деревьев, преимущественно в древесине дуба, на протяжении 4—6 лет[4].

Жуки-олени встречаются преимущественно редко и локально. Ареал вида сокращается, в связи с чем он занесён в охранные документы и Красные книги многих стран Европы, включая Украину[8], Российскую Федерацию, Казахстан[9] и Белоруссию[10], также с 1982 года жук-олень занесён во второе приложение Бернской конвенции[1]. Основными причинами сокращения популяции жука-оленя являются массовые вырубки лесов, санитарные «чистки» лесных угодий, неконтролируемый сбор жуков коллекционерами и случайными лицами
