Kevin Garnett Upset with Timberwolves over Flip Saunders Memorial Service
April 19, 2017Minnesota Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett revealed Wednesday that he took issue with the manner in which the organization honored late head coach Flip Saunders.
The team held a memorial service for Saunders last season after his death from lymphoma. KG felt the team could have done more, according to Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press:
I thought he wasn't celebrated the proper way. You have high school banners, you have (expletive) hockey banners (hanging in the rafters). You couldn't put a Flip banner in Target Center, some place that we helped build? ... We established that market. I helped grow that with him. You can't put him in the (rafters)?
Garnett considered Saunders one of his closest friends and was miffed that the team put together a three-minute video tribute but didn't allow him to speak at length about the late coach.
Despite the issue, Garnett wished the T'Wolves well moving forward: "I wish the Timberwolves all the best. I talk to [Karl-Anthony Towns] and some of the young guys all the time. I hope they can find a special place in commemorating Flip and celebrating him properly."
KG retired following the 2015-16 season.
Garnett spent 14 of his 21 NBA seasons with the Timberwolves, making 10 All-Star teams and being named NBA MVP in 2004.
Per Krawczynski, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said in February he was hoping to plan a jersey retirement ceremony for the future Hall of Fame forward.
