This subject is taken from Giovanni Boccaccio’s fourteenth century collection of stories, ‘Il Decameron’. Cymon, the brutish son of a Cyprian noble, was banished by his father to the family’s country estate. Rambling across the land one morning, Cymon is struck by the sight of the sleeping Iphigenia lying by a stream. This study depicts the two sleeping figures in an intimate embrace, emphasising the strength of their love, which transformed Cymon from an oafish fool to a refined noble.
