Day of Defeat gets TF2 treatment with new map, achievements

Following the Team Fortress 2 mode, Valve has released a new map, achievements …

I've always been a fan of Day of Defeat. Though the game has changed significantly since its modest days as a fan-made mod back when we could storm Omaha online, Day of Defeat: Source is still a good game. Thankfully, Valve hasn't completely abandoned the World War II shooter for the sake of Team Fortress 2; a huge update has rolled out alongside a forthcoming free weekend trial. From the patch list:

  • DOD_Palermo map – This new map is based on the popular "Salerno" map and combines the likes of Anzio with CS_Italy from Counter-Strike.
  • Steam Commnuity integration – Like Team Fortress 2, players will now be able to get the most out of the Steam Community. User profiles and pictures will be attached to player tags, individual statistics will be tracked and tied to your account, and more.
  • Achievements – 51 achievements have been added to the game, rewarding players for besting certain accomplishments such as Jack of All Trades, which requires you to get a kill with each of the five weapon archetypes in a single life.
  • Freeze Cam – Just like Team Fortress 2, upon death players will be greeted with the Freeze Cam, which zooms in and freezes on the player's killer, letting the player see where death came from and take a screenshot.

As with most Valve updates, this one is free and is now available for download. It's great to see Day of Defeat get a bit of a refresh and adopt some of the finer points of Team Fortress 2. If you haven't played it before, give it a shot: it may be another WWII shooter, but it's a good one.
