Anguloa eburnea also known as The "Tulip Orchid" is considerably one of the most rewarding of species orchids producing flowers that smell of vanilla. This particular species of the genus Anguloa from the Cymbidieae tribe and Maxillariinae subtribe is originally found growing on the steep slopes from Colombia to Peru. Plants in this genus can grow to be quite large with pseudobulbs reaching over 9" tall with plicate, ribbed leaves that can span over 4' long. An easy growing terrestrial that will lose its leaves at the start of each new growing season. This species can produce up to six inflorescences per pseudobulb yielding uniquely shaped, 2" flowers ivory colored flowers in the late spring and early summer blooming period. In some cases these orchids have been able to produce both twice a year. This genus has a considerably unusual growing cycle. At the beginning of its growing season (~September) a new leafy shoot and flower buds will begin to emerge together. At this time, the plant will also shed its leaves.

  • Plant Stage:  Mature size but NOT currently with buds/blooms
  • Flowers will emit a VANILLA-LIKE FRAGRANCE when in season!!
  • Average Plant Height: 24-30" foliage height
  • Blooms size: 2"
  • Pot Size:  6.5"
  • Temperature: best suited to cooler temperatures with vigorous air movement, intermediate temperatures are tolerable
  • Light: Low-Medium lighting is adequate. Nearly direct sun in the summer (if temperatures can be kept cool) with as much sun in the winter would be most beneficial.
  • Water: Regularly during the growing season allowing plant to dry between waterings. Dry rest during the winter will encourage blooming. Water just enough to keep plant from shirveling during rest then heavily when new growth appears.
  • Fertilizer: Full strength at each watering when new growths are forming.
  • Media: a finer mix similar to that of cymbidiums work well.
