About Our School

Long past in the year 1904, Abhayeswari H.E. School took its birth at Abhayapuri town under the patronage of her highness the late queen Abhayeswari of the then Bijni Raj Estate. Within a few spans of time, this school was able to achieve the recognition & appreciation from the Calcutta University. In the year 1956, when the town was under the management of the then Bijni Raj Estate government, some of indigenous people put their demand to make this school a purely government school.

A Sketch of Rani Abhayeswari

Queen Abhayeswari Devi was one of the benevolent rulers of Bijni Raj Estate. She got the opportunity to rule over the Bijni Raj Estate after the death of her husband, king Kumudnarayan. The Bijni Raj Estate was the largest Zamindary Estate of undivided Goalpara district of Assam. The founder of the Bijni ruling dynasty, Bijit Narayan also known as Chandranarayan was a descendent of the Koch Royal family. The Bijni Ruling Dynasty established by Bijit Narayan in 1671, came to an end in 1956 after abolition of the zamindary by the government of Assam. Till that time many rulers ruled over the Bijni Raj Estate. Queen Abhayeswari Devi was one of them. She was the only ruler of Bijni Raj Estate who was honoured by the British administration by offering the Kaizer-i-Hind gold medal. Queen Abhayeswari in her tenure adopted a series of measures for the spread of education in Bijni Raj Estate. She established many schools, Sanskrit tols and other centres of learning for both boys and girls.
Queen Abhayeswari introduced in her kingdom the Dhap Salami system which lateron proved to be a very good medium for maintaining cordial relation between the rulers and the subjects.

The following thesis has been published by Dr. Sekhar Brahma and Rajasree Das on the "Contribution of the Bijni Rajas towards the Development of Education: A Study in Historical Perspective". This includes some valuable information about the "The rulers of Bijni Raj Estate - Queen Abhayeswari".
