Common Name or Meaning The Oxapampe Epidendrum [A province of Peru]

Found in Ecuador and Peru at elevations of 2500 to 3000 meters as a miniature sized, cold growing, pendant epiphyte with small, clustered pseudobulbs enveloped completely by several basal, imbricating, unequal, papiraceous, leafless sheaths and carrying a single, apical, elliptic, acute, coriaceous, dark green and slightly glaucous leaf that blooms in the fall on a terminal, racemose, simultaneously 3 to 4 flowered inflorescence occuring only once, with floral bracts that are shorter than the ovaries and carrying resupinate, green flowers with a purple to pink lip with fragrance not recorded.

E oxapampense is part of the GROUP Kalopternix characterized by the erect or pendant, 1 or 2-leaved pseudobulbs, glaucous leaves, resupinate flowers with a wide-trullate lip, the margin fleshy-erose. The species has pendant, single leafed pseudobulbs, glaucous leaves and resupinate flowers with a wide trullate lip, the margin fleshy-erose, E serpens which has a triangular lacerate lip, sepals that are less than .4" [1 cm] and a short and stout column, E carmelense which is smaller overall, long strings of growths, a cordate, reniform lip and sepals to .4" [1 cm] long, Epidendrum mantinianum which is recognized by the upright elliptic leaves, the large flowers, lateral sepals 1.2 to 1.92" [30 to 48 mm] long, and the ovate-cordiform, acute to acuminate lip, Epidendrum sophronitis Linden & Rchb.f. has an upright habit, a single cuneate, elliptic, acute leaf per pseudobulb, 1.48 x .6" [37 x 15 mm], and the acuminate sepals are .48" [12 mm] long and E moronense with pendant single leafed pseudobulbs, a longer and thinner column, a reniform lip with lacerate margins, bicaulose and has a low keel in the center of the lip."
