Cycnoches peruvianum

"Cycnoches peruvianum Rolfe is native to Ecuador and Peru. They grow in damp tropical and mountain forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes. In Ecuador, they are found in the provinces of Napo and Zamora-Chinchipe at heights of 450-800 m.

Description: 

With elongate, cylindric, composed of several noded pseudobulb that is enveloped completely by several, scarious, foliaceous sheaths and carrying thin, plicate, distichous, deciduous leaves that blooms mostly in the fall and winter in situ with an arcuate to pendant, 45 to 75 cm long, many flowered male or few flowered female, racemose inflorescence that arise from the leaf nodes near the apex of the newest, mature, fusiform to conical pseudobulb.

Distribution:

Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru.

Ecological:

As a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte from wet montane forests at elevations of 450 to 900 m.

Flowering times:

Blooms mostly in the fall and winter.

Flower size:

4.0 cm.

Cultivation:

Grow in warm conditions with partially bright light. Water regularly during growing season and when plants drop leaves during dormancy reduce watering. During dormancy only water about twice a month to keep pseudobulbs from shriveling. Resume watering normally when new growths occur in spring. Plants can die easily from over watering. Plants are usually grown in bark with perlite, cork, full sphagnum moss, and tree fern. Female flowers will often be produced when high light and low moisture is present. While male flowers are produced in shadier situation of higher moisture.
