Dryas iulia Hubner [1807]

Dryas iulia is a commonly seen Heliconiine at La Selva, in clearings including the successional plots. It lays its eggs on leaves, and often dried tendrils!, of Passiflora biflora, P. megacoriacea and P. arbelaezii. Dryas looks very much like its comimic Eueides aliphera, which lay eggs on old leaves of P. menispermifolia and other species at La Selva. Range: entire neotropics up into southern USA

Dryas iulia adult. The Costa Rican form is almost totally orange. Newly marked Dryas, raised in the lab.
The only butterfly species I have seen using P. arbelaezii. Dryas caterpillar eating Passiflora arbelaezii.
5th instar caterpillar on P. biflora. Pre-pupa.
Pupae are hard to find. Very camouflaged.
